AI-Powered Travel Robot Next Innovation in Japan

The Persuebot is the newest innovation coming out of the Tech Mecca, Japan. The new bot will be debuting/testing in November. This robot-cop esq. security will use complex machine learning to provide security and information services in Tokyo's Shinjuku Station. The stations is a fairly high-traffic area of the city, with well over 200,000 daily riders.

Future

This robot is set to be the smartest personal robot to be used in the mass market. It is equipped with AI-integrated security cameras. The concept behind the robot is to decrease human error and analyze potential threats in these high traffic traveller areas. The cameras are able to detect suspicious behaviour as well as packages and report directly to the security guards smartphones. It will also be able to even decipher body language of the travellers and detect if they are displaying any potentially threatening and aggressive behaviour. What could this mean for the travel industry as a whole? Is the overall goal to disrupt the travel security industry and potentially end the unfortunately increasing number of threats in high-traffic public transit areas?

The Robot

Though the current version of this robot does not resemble the futuristic droids of the Star Wars franchise, or the defiant machines of I, Robot, it clearly is a step towards the machine run future. The current model stands 1.57 meters tall and weighs almost 400 pounds. The machine still in its early iterations can only move at about 30cm per second, however, it is quite capable of travelling on uneven ground. The November tests will allow the developers to examine and understand how the robot handles its surroundings, interacts with the busy people of the station, and test its hardware/features. The CEO of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics is quite confident this machine can aid their physical presence during the busy event and hopefully mitigate any potential protesting and public displays that were present in Rio.

Regardless of how this first test goes, it is quite clear we are heading into a new realm for travel and technology and it will be a big impact...we hope for the better!
